Your 50's
As you enter your 50's, you are probably noticing more visible signs of aging such as deeper wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and drier skin. This is because the collagen and elastin fibers in your skin are depleting and losing their natural moisture, decreasing elasticity. Science has given us many skincare products to help reduce the aging process; however, healthy skin begins with a healthy lifestyle.
Drinking plenty of water is important at every stage of life. Water flushes toxins from your body and keeps you hydrated, and hydration is an important contributor to healthy skin. This can help combat the dryness you may experience.
Be sure to get enough sleep. A good night’s sleep definitely helps you look refreshed, but more importantly it gives your body time to repair itself from the damage you do during the day by producing extra protein.
Do what you can to relieve stress. Today’s on-the-run society can take a toll on your skin and your body in general. Carving out some “me” quiet time during your day to clear your mind will help your tension level. Take a yoga class, relax in a bubble bath or just turn off the television and close your eyes for a few moments. Carving 10 to 20 minutes out of each day to practice relaxation will go a long way.
Put a lid on the regular, end-of-the-day scotch or glass of wine habit. Over a period of time, alcohol can damage blood vessels in your skin. This can cause you to appear flushed or the vessels themselves may appear on your skin’s surface. While most of us enjoy the occasional drink with friends or as an accompaniment to a fine meal, it is best to keep alcohol from becoming part of your daily ritual.
Some experts believe that exposure to smoke, even if it is second-hand, can cause as much damage to your skin as ultraviolet rays. Smoking depletes vitamin C from your body, making your skin look older. Giving up smoking can be extremely helpful in your fight against the aging process.
Exposure to extreme outdoor elements also takes its toll on the skin. Cold weather dries skin out, while too much sun exposure is a primary culprit in skin damage. In cold climates you should protect your skin by bundling up with a scarf and gloves, and using moisturizer regularly. As you get into your 50's, creams are better than lotions for keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day.
When you are outdoors, wear sunscreen year-round with an SPF of at least 15, and wear a hat to keep the sun out of your face. In your 50's, protecting yourself from the sun becomes more important because your skin is more fragile and sun exposure damages it much easier.
Stick to a healthy diet rich in antioxidants. Fruits such as blueberries and strawberries, as well as dark green and orange vegetables are a key source.
Be sure you are getting enough exercise. Exercise tones muscles and promotes blood flow, which helps you look younger all-around. So hit the gym for a jazzercise class, take the dog for a walk or round up a group of friends for a bike ride. You’ll enjoy the time for socialization, and feel good about doing something for yourself.
