Your 60's

As you enter your 60's, you are dealing with all of the issues your skin has faced throughout your life. Summer days at the pool as a child, your high school job as a lifeguard, exposure to extreme winter cold in a northern climate or maybe you were a smoker for many years. Regardless of the abuse we all put our bodies through at some point, there are ways to slow down the aging process.

In your 60's, you experience extremely dry skin because its natural oil production slows down. Your cells are turning over slower, so it may also appear dull. These factors, combined with the loss of collagen and elastin, may leave dark spots on your skin and cause deeper wrinkles and sagging.

You can, and should, still have beautiful skin.

Because of its dryness, you should use a very gentle cleanser or avoid the cleanser completely. Use a moisturizer with a high concentration of oil; you may even consider using a product as simple as Vaseline overnight. During the day, you should apply your moisturizer several times as needed.

In your 60's, you should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Your skin is more delicate now and can burn much easier. Be sure to slather on the sunscreen year-round. Wear protection of SPF 15 or higher on all areas of your skin that are exposed.

Botox treatments are an excellent choice for women in their 60's. Botox actually freezes the muscles on your face that cause wrinkles to show, so it helps keep new lines from forming.

A chemical peel can remove those unsightly brown spots that began to show in your 40's and 50's, but really took over in your 60's.

Diet always plays such an important role in how healthy you, your skin and your body look. The old adage is true, you are what you eat. When it comes to skin, taking antioxidants like vitamins C and E or drinking a glass of green tea can make a big difference. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and whole grains, and don't forget to drink at least 60 ounces of water each day.

Science

Science has also found many ways to help slow the signs of aging. Products like Botox and dermafillers like Restylane or Juverderm provide very successful results. These products are all injected into the skin but work differently. Botox immobilizes the facial muscles that create wrinkles to downsize them, while Restylane and Juvederm fill in the fine lines to increase volume, improve sagging and give your skin a firmer appearance.

Regardless of your decade, these products can take years off your face.
