Though humans have been around for millions and millions of years, "modern man" is a fairly recent phenomenon. But, we can't separate modern man from our history. It's a fact that for 99 percent of human existence, we lived in small, nomadic bands of hunter-gatherers — typically a few dozen people. Our ancestors were, as anthropologist John Tooby puts it, "on a camping trip that lasted and entire lifetime."

Our brains and our bodies have evolved to solve problems of the era. And, for 99 percent of our era, those problems have been about food, shelter, finding mates, raising children, recognizing who to trust and who is dangerous.

As we became more civilized, more like today's "modern man," the hunter-gatherers turned into farmers. When this happened, we became more sophisticated and innovative — more specialized. These hunter-gatherer-turned-farmers were now creating an abundance of food — food to eat, food to trade, food to grow the population. From the time of Jesus Christ to the nineteenth century, world population rose steadily from about 200 million to 1 billion. Today, world population is about 6 billion. That's a lot of people in a relatively short period of time!

Farming was the driving force of the civilized world. In the early 1900s, the United States had about 30 million farmers to feed about 100 million people.

But, then something very interesting and important happened. As the population grew so did the innovation. As we became more innovative and industrious, we became more efficient. By 1980, we only needed 3 million farmers to feed 300 million people.

As a nation, we quickly went from hunter- gatherer, to farmer and just enough, to technology driven and too much. We now had more food than we needed. In fact, the government actually started paying farmers NOT to grow more food.

Because there was such a surplus of food, prices began to fall and farmers moved from farming the raw foodstuffs to manufacturing the raw foodstuffs into accessible food. The focus now was on creating foods for grocery shelves and busy consumers. Cereals, condiments, processed cheeses, canned foods, frozen foods and snack foods were all invented.

Now, here's the problem with all that. Remember, because 99 percent of our existence was in a hunter-gatherer mode, our bodies are used to eating what a hunter-gatherer would eat.

Makes sense, right? So our bodies are used to a plant-rich diet — nuts, fruits, beans, roots with some game meat thrown in when available. And, since there was no General Mills out there in the caves, no single type of food was ever found in real abundance. This means we consumed a variety of foods containing the different proteins, vitamins and minerals we required.

So, fast forward to today and we have a body that needs a plant-rich diet but an environment of only processed foods — foods that are made for shelves, not bodies. Foods that have most of the nutrients "processed" right out of them.

The average American is completely unaware of just how poor the nutrition is in the food they eat. They get hungry, they eat what's available. What's available is a lot of fast food or food that sits on a shelf in a grocery store.

Over time, this leads to obesity and poor health.

Act Like Your Ancestors

The best thing you can do for your body is to go back and feed your body just as your ancestors did — fresh, organic nuts, fruits, beans, vegetables, and game meat once in a while.

As a doctor, I understand the mind-body connection. At The Center For Beautiful Bodies we get rid of unsightly fat. We do this because we know that when you look better you'll feel better about yourself and many good things will come of this. But I also know, as a doctor, this is only addressing half the problem. I not only want you to look better and feel psychologically better about yourself, I also want you to feel better — period. Feeling better starts with eating better.

Eat better — feel better — keep the weight off.

It really is that simple.

Try it for one month. For 30 days, act as if you are back in the stone age — food-wise anyway.

Go hunting for NATURAL foods. Foods that are not processed. Foods that are organic and naturally grown — without pesticides and dyes and added fats and salts, etc. Go to your local health food store, or better, your local farmer's market. We include a listing of local farmer's markets at the end of this newsletter. Please zip us a note if you know of others that are not on this list. Try eating this way for one month and just see how much better you feel. You will notice your energy level going way up and you’ll have an entirely different outlook on life. I promise!

And, now that you know how to eat better, you'll automatically begin to lose weight. The calories you consume will all be nutritious calories so your body won't crave more and more. You'll begin to consume enough calories to sustain yourself and won't think about food as much. You'll be satisfied.

If you find that there are a few areas of fat that are not falling off easily, then we can help you get rid of those areas. And, because you are now eating healthy, those areas will be gone forever. Okay?

Yes, it's a little different but give it a go and see how you feel!

To your continued beauty and health,
Dr Rasolli
