Repair Unsightly Veins

When spring is in the air and you pull last year's shorts from your bottom drawer, you will probably put them on, look in the mirror and think your legs need a little color. But what about the unsightly purple veins you suddenly notice? That was not the color you were thinking of, and so a procedure called sclerotherapy is just what you need.

Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to make spider and varicose veins disappear. Spider veins appear near the surface of the skin on the legs or face. Also known as broken capillaries, they are blue, purple or red and often take on a web-like appearance. Varicose veins are larger and protrude under the skin. They can be purple, blue or sometimes remain flesh-colored and often appear on the calves or insides of the legs. These are more serious, as they are not only unattractive but can be painful.

In both cases, sclerotherapy is an excellent treatment. The procedure works by injecting a sclerosing solution, which collapses the veins and forces them to fade. This is a safe, short procedure that does not require anesthesia.

Both spider and varicose veins are very common. Approximately half of all American women suffer from some sort of vein problem. These are caused by a variety of factors including age, heredity, hormonal changes, pregnancy, obesity, leg injury and prolonged standing. Sun exposure can contribute to spider veins on the face.

Once you have had sclerotherapy, the treated veins will not return. The procedure does not, however, prevent new veins from forming. Here are some tips to help keep spider and varicose veins away.

  • Wear sunscreen to protect the skin on your face and deter spider veins from forming.
  • Control your weight.
  • Avoid birth control pills.
  • Don't smoke or drink alcohol heavily.
  • Don't cross your legs.
  • Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Exercise regularly to improve circulation, along with leg and vein strength.

What You Should Expect from Your Sclerotherapy Treatment

Sclerotharapy is a relatively new procedure in the United States. The experts at the Center for Beautiful Bodies have been specifically trained in the procedure, and will administer the treatment safely right on site.

Your session will take anywhere from 15-45 minutes, and does not require downtime. The pain associated with sclerotherapy is minimal, similar to any other procedure requiring injections.

The doctor will administer approximately one injection per inch of vein. Once the procedure is finished, compression therapy is applied with tightly wrapped elastic bandages. Sclerotherapy may cause some swelling and bruising. Therefore, results may be seen in approximately two weeks, once these factors have subsided. Depending upon your needs, two or more treatments may be necessary for optimum results.
